Canada Files Softwood Lumber Challenge

The Canadian government has launched a NAFTA challenge against the United States over stiff softwood lumber duties.

Canada gave formal notice Tuesday that it wants a binational panel struck over the US Commerce Department’s decision to impose duties on Canadian softwood exports.

“The US Department of Commerce’s decision on punitive countervailing and anti-dumping duties against Canada’s softwood lumber producers is unfair, unwarranted, and deeply troubling,” John Babcock, a spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada told iPolitics in an email.
